WoW: When will patch 9.1 be released - do we have to wait until June?

Patch 9.1 will be the first major content update for WoW: Shadowlands - and what a patch it will be. We finally get to take revenge on Sylvanas (hopefully), we find out what's happening with Anduin , and we get to take to the skies with our flying mounts. Various other contents like the mega dungeon Tazavesh

and the new area Korthia invite us to explore and promise material for lots of further adventures.

What the WoW developers have not yet revealed at BlizzConline, however, is the release date for Patch 9.1. Nevertheless, there are some clues as to when the update might be released, which is why we'll just speculate a bit for you.

Will patch 9.1 be the latest first content patch for a WoW expansion ever?

If we look at the past, the WoW developers have released a first content update, i.e. a patch X.1 for an expansion on average three months after the release of patch X.0 - the only exception: In Wrath of the Lich King it took five months. Shadowlands, however, is now almost three months old and so far not even patch 9.0.5 has arrived on the live servers.

However, the developers did not release a second raid with patch X.1 earlier, or as in the case of Battle for Azeroth, at least did not bring it to the live servers directly with the release of the update. The WoW team expects each season and raid to run for about five to six months. Accordingly, there would theoretically still be some time until patch 9.1 and thus the second Shadowlands raid with the Sanctum of Domination would have to appear.

So if we assume that the developers release the second raid around six months after the first raid, it would be May 2020 - measured by the start date of Castle Nathria (December 09, 2020). However, because a patch with a new raid is usually released two to three weeks before the first raid difficulty levels open so that players can familiarize themselves with any gameplay changes, patch 9.1 would have to land on the live servers as early as April.

Before Patch 9.1 is released, however, it will have to go through the testing phase on the PTR. Again, that won't happen until patch 9.0.5 is released, so mid-March 2021 at the earliest. WoW developers would only be able to test patch 9.1 for about a month and a half, though, if they're actually aiming for April for 9.1. That would be pretty low, especially considering the fact that the testing phase of such a big update usually lasts two months.

Measured against that, patch 9.1 could be released in mid-May at the earliest, and the Raid could open its doors in early June. The author of these lines even believes that the WoW developers will take some more time - also due to the fact that the Corona pandemic is still having an effect. Therefore, she assumes that the update will probably be released in June and the raid will follow two to three weeks later. This would make patch 9.1 the X.1 patch that comes out the latest of all WoW expansions.
