WoW: Formerly April Fool's joke, today in the in-game store - how times change
How times can change - even in WoW. While the developers were still making fun of things a few years ago, today they implement them into their game themselves. We're talking, of course, about the Grimmling Wings, which are currently up for grabs in the store if you buy six months of game time. WoW characters with wings? The WoW developers once thought that this sounds strange and doesn't really fit into an MMORPG. In the now legendary patch notes for the first of April, they even made fun of two things at once, which have now arrived in the world of Azeroth - winged characters and rampant microtransactions.

And for only $19.99!!!! What a fantastic offer that fortunately turned out to be merely an April Fool's joke. At the time, by the way, among other things, a reference to the wannabe WoW killer Aion, where characters can fly around with wings. And, of course, a reference to rampant microtransactions, which WoW had still been halfway successful at keeping out of at the time.
A good nine years later, we see how times have changed. Microtransactions for tons of mounts, pets, and toys are now as much a part of WoW as Horde and Alliance, and even wings for our characters have now arrived in the game. Whether this has made our all-time favorite MMORPG a better or worse game is something everyone has to decide for themselves. But it's definitely worth noting that we're at a point today that developers used to actively mock.
