WoW: Christie Golden on Blizzard, Sylvanas, passion and WoW lore

Sylvanas Windrunner bears many titles in World of Warcraft: Banshee Queen, the Dark Princess, Ranger General, or Queen of the Forsaken. Most of the epithets bear witness to a tragic fate that has shaped her story to this day. After her death, Sylvanas was doomed to live a life as an outsider. For a long time she was content with her role as leader of the undead. Only the return of the Lich King in Wrath of the Lichking lured her out of the Undercity. After the death of Arthas, Sylvanas voluntarily threw herself to her death from the battlements of Icecrown Citadel. But that was far from the end of her story.

Today we know that after her voluntary death in WotLK, Sylvanas' soul landed in the Maw, where she first met the Jailer. He was the driving force behind the Banshee Queen's actions in subsequent years. Their alliance ended in the Sanctum of Domination when Sylvanas rebelled against the Dungeon Master. In the end, she got back a part of her soul that Zovaal had once stolen from her. Since then, Sylvanas has sought redemption in the Shadowlands
